On a study break

This is me (not really) right now! Pulling at my hair yet studying at the same time. In other words, I am on a fun reading break and so I must put my blog on a break too! Sad day!

edited by Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci

YA

Summary

Acclaimed authors Holly Black (Ironside)and Cecil Castellucci (Boy Proof) have united in geekdom to edit short stories from some of the best selling and most promising geeks in young adult literature: M.T. Anderson, Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, John Green, Tracy Lynn, Cynthia and Greg Leitich Smith, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Barry Lyga, Wendy Mass, Garth Nix, Scott Westerfield, Lisa Yee, and Sara Zarr.

With illustrated interstitials from comic book artists Hope Larson and Bryan Lee O'Malley, Geektastic covers all things geeky, from Klingons and Jedi Knights to fan fiction, theater geeks, and cosplayers. Whether you're a former, current, or future geek, or if you just want to get in touch with your inner geek, Geektastic will help you get your geek on!

My Thoughts

This is a great anthology for the geek in all of us- although you may want to have a working understanding of many geeky subgenres: Conventions, Dr. Who, Comics Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rocky Horror Picture Show, LARPing, Star Trek, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. But for those of us who grew up with all these things it is a gold mine of hilarity!

Some of my favorite stories include:

Once You're a Jedi, You're a Jedi All the Way by Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci
This is the short story that started it all! Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci collaborated on this story but realized they would have nowhere to publish it and started their own anthology. This story deals with a Jedi and a Klingon who fall in love at a convention despite their "cultural" differences.

One of Us by Tracy Lynn
A popular cheerleader gets geek lessons from the local gaming club to communicate better with her boyfriend.

The Wrath of Dawn by Cynthia Leitich Smith and Greg Leitich Smith
Buffy fans will enjoy a little sisters perpective on the character we all love to hate.

The Quiet Knight by Garth Nix
When LARPing and school collide will The Quiet Knight continue to protect his friends.

Freak the Geek by John Green
When the annual Freak the Geek goes under way, two friends find themselves on the run!

The Stars at the Finish Line by Wendy Mass
Stars bring two rivals closer together when they try to complete the Messier Marathon.

It's Just a Jump to the Left by Libba Bray
Emotions collide when two Rocky Horror Picture Show fans grow up.
