Book Jacket Summary
Zombies Calling creator Faith Erin Hicks brings her manga-fueled art style and pop-culture sensibilities to girl's boarding schools in her latest book The War at Ellsmere. Jun is the newest scholarship student at the prestigious Ellsmere girls' boarding school - but to a lot of the privileged rich girls, "scholarship student" is just a code for "charity case." Fortunately, Jun has an ally in the quirky Cassie, who swears the stories about the man-eating unicorn that lives in the forest outside of the school are true. Between queen bees and mythical beasts, Jun has quite the school year ahead of her.

My Thoughts
Two out of three ain't bad. I am really starting to like Faith Erin Hick's writing style after a somewhat auspicious start. However the latest two, Friends with Boys and The War at Ellsmere, are very engaging. I love the elements of friendship and and how people come together. This did happen in Brain Camp but was not for me with all the gore.
Jun is starting a new school year at a very elite private school called Ellsmere making a friend and an enemy in the first day. Cassie is her roommate and is a little strange but a good friend. Emily is "a pretty standard dish: bully with a side of spoiled" (28) and she sets out to make Jun's stay a living hell. Typical boarding school antics and angst going on but Hicks puts her own unique spin on it with Cassie. She tells Jun about the history of Ellsmere that involves two brothers and a white stag. Lets just say that the sudden unicorn is sudden and leave it at that. Hicks seems to always insert a hint of the paranormal in an otherwise normal boarding school story. I would recommend this one to teens because it does deal with loss, friendship, and getting the upper hand on a bully. I wish Hicks would continue this story because Jun and Cassie are such interesting characters.
