Odd Duck by Cecil Castellucci and Sara Varnon

Odd Duck
by Cecil Castellucci and Sara Vernon
Graphic Novel
May 2013

Book Jacket Summary
Theodora is a perfectly normal duck. She may swim with a teacup balanced on her head and stay north when the rest of the ducks fly south for the winter, but there's nothing so odd about that.  Chad, on the other hand, is one strange bird. Theodora quite likes him, but she can't overlook his odd habits. It's a good thing Chad has a normal friend like Theodora to set a good example for him.  But who exactly is the odd duck here? Theodora may not like the answer. Sara Varon (Robot Dreams) teams up with Cecil Castellucci (Grandma's Gloves) for a gorgeous, funny, and heartwarming examination of the perils and pleasures of friendship.

My Thoughts
Theodora has a very set schedule that she goes through everyday. She does her exercises and swims in the pond with a tea cup on her head for balance. She buys her duck food with a mango salsa on the side. Her world is rocked when a very odd duck moves in next door. Chad has dyed his feathers and has very strange sculptures on his front lawn. Theodora could not be more happy when winter comes because she thinks that Chad will go South with all the other birds. Unlike her fellow ducks Theodora likes to stay in her house and read while all the others leave. However Chad stays! What will Theodora do? Will they ever find anything in common?
This is one of the cutest books I've read this year. Cecil Castellucci is often featured on my blog because she writes books and graphic novels. I adore her writing style and The Plain Janes that she wrote a few years ago. Sara Varon is starting to pop up more and more too. Her art work is simple but there are little details that draw the eye. I love how Theodora and Chad are so different even though they are both ducks. Personalities shine through each character.
I would recommend this one to anyone. It is great! I cannot tell if it is a graphic novel or more of a advanced picture book. It it put out by First Second, so I am going with graphic novel. Either way, it can be enjoyed by many age ranges.
