Lovabye Dragon by Barbra Joose

Hello everyone! You may have noticed that I have not been posting a whole lot of material. I had back surgery plus three months of pain leading up to it. I am going to take things slowly and try to get back in the swing of things!

Lovabye Dragon
by Barbra Joose
illustrated by Randy Cecil
Picture Book
September 2012

Book Jacket Summary
In her bed in her room in her castle, a girl longs for a dragon.
In his nest in his cave in his mountain, a dragon dreams of a girl.

When a lonely dragon follows a trail of princess tears, a beautiful friendship is born. They march and sing, roar and whisper, hide and seek, then settle into snug companionship at bedtime. Barbara Joosse’s fiercely protective and gently loving dragon cavorts across the pages, endearingly illustrated by Randy Cecil. At the end of the day, who can resist curling up in the embrace of a lovabye dragon?
My Thoughts
I saw this in the bookstore and knew a little girl that would love it and I was right. Dragons were her favorite thing in the world (until Frozen came out but that is different) and it was fitting in with her collection. Plus the little princess was a brunette who wanted a dragon of her own!
The first thing I want to point out when looking at this book is that the princess has a stuffed dragon and little knights scattered across her room. I thought that this was an interesting inversion of the little girl stereotype. It was refreshing to see toy knights in a girls room rather than a boys. I will try not to go into a rant but it was interesting to see that if you made it a prince instead of a princess it would be the same book.
I would highly recommend this picture book and not just to little girls who happen to like dragons. It is sweet and a nice bedtime read. It has a more muted tone with different shades of grey. This will lull the kids to sleep a bit easier but it is also great for a dragon themed story time!
