Book Jacket Summary
Laszlo is afraid of the dark. The dark is not afraid of Laszlo.

Laszlo lives in a house. The dark lives in the basement.

One night, the dark comes upstairs to Laszlo's room, and Laszlo goes down to the basement.

My Thoughts
Who in their right mind would read this to their child?! Ummm.... Me! This book is almost horror light and I love it. I was told that my friends little boy clung to her arm but still begged her to turn the page. It is like that, scary but you  need to know what happens Laszlo as the Dark beckons him down to the basement. I think I got chills reading it to myself.
Any book with Jon Klassen's name on it gets my attention now. He has written and illustrated some of my favorite picture books in the last few years. Teaming up with Lemony Snicket was a stroke of genius because Klassen's drawing and Snickets words pair wonderfully together and gives the reader a sense of foreboding. However, *SPOLIER* Laszlo goes down to the basement and the Dark actually shows him where the spare light bulbs are kept. Not a scary ending but you never know with Sniicket.
This book is going down on my favorites list and not only on the picture book list. I really hope that Snicket does more picture books and that Klassen is the one to illustrate. The use of light and dark are perfect. The flashlight is giving Laszlo just enough light to see in front of him but you don't know what the dark wants. Guess I can't rave enough about it!
