Book Jacket Summary
Ten birds are startled to discover a monster. One by one, they fashion increasingly elaborate sartorial creations as they try to scare him off. Can the tenth bird find just the right thing? In this playful companion to her Governor General's Award winning Ten Birds, author and illustrator Cybèle Young plays with shapes, shadows and sounds in this inventive counting book.
I am still trying to get back in a reading groove and picture books just make my day. I really wanted to see this one from NetGalley because I am a fan of the black and white pictures. This is a beautiful book! The black and white drawings are exquisite and make me laugh at the detail of each monster! I will now have to go back and look at the Ten Birds by the same author.
This is a different kind of counting book because it is not just a number and objects. In this book the birds add objects and themselves into the narrative of the story. The birds are scared of a shadow of a monster and make bigger and bigger monsters out of clothes to scare it off. It is just funny how they name their creations things like the Hideous Whip-Tail Gangle Raptor. I would recommend this one as a bedtime story and not just a counting book. It is more detailed and you can ask the children what kind of monster they would make out of clothes.
