The operation of a big fleet of vehicles may resemble herding cats. Having such myriad moving parts, such as fuel consumption, maintenance schedules, and driver performance, it is similar juggling flaming swords to have to monitor all of this manually. A good fleet management system (FMS) comes in at that point.

In the case of selecting an appropriate fleet management system, there is no standardized one. The requirements of a big fleet differ greatly with that of a smaller fleet. It requires something that is flexible, scalable, and able to give insights on a wide scale of points of data. It is all about getting the right fit of your operations, budget and goals.
To begin with, you will have to take scalability into consideration. Your fleet must expand and your system, as well, has to expand. What works with 50 vehicles may not be able to work with 500. Search an FMS that has a flexible plan and can be expanded to accommodate expansion without loss in performance. Consider it as a wardrobe- purchase a system that fits you at present but that will be able to be extended to accommodate your needs as they evolve.
Then, there is the matter of real time data. An excellent fleet management system must also offer real-time monitoring of your cars. This will enable you to take fast action whenever things go wrong, in case of a breakdown, a traffic jam, and a change of route. Real-time updates play a vital role in minimizing delays, optimization of routes as well as increasing efficiency of the fleet at large. Without this feature in your system, then it is like operating a foggy windshield–wish you the best! Choose wisely, and your fleet will thank you for it.
